Reconnected: Midtown Elizabeth’s Payphone Beautification Project

Reconnected is a public art initiative transforming eight retired payphones in Midtown Elizabeth into vibrant, story-driven landmarks. Each design centers on themes of greeting and farewell, blending nostalgia, humor, and community memory through bold color and layered symbolism. Local residents contributed ideas, names, and personal stories, allowing each phone to hold collective meaning. What were once forgotten objects of the past now stand as playful reminders of connection, shared history, and the beauty of being seen within a community.
